Personality
Riddle was known to be highly intelligent, as expressed by his performance on schoolwork at Hogwarts. He was ruthless and sadistic even as a child, showing no remorse for the emotional torture he caused to the other orphans he lived with. This led him to be independent and built up an arrogance, believing to be superior above everyone else. He showed little mercy and felt no need for human companion or friendship; the only affection he thrived off was that of his pet snake. Everything was thought of in the ability to have power. Riddle only cared about how to possess it and use it, being ignorant of other values. As a young adult, Riddle was extremely charismatic and begun to group together his death eaters at a young age. He never once treated them as equals but rather slaves and would inflict pain or murder when dissatisfied. Riddle had a phobia of death and went above normal circumstances to avoid it. This phobia gave him an obsessive personality; causing him to focus on one idea or object until it to his level of satisfaction.
Background
Tom Riddle came from Merope Gaunt, a pure-blood wizard, and Tom Riddle Sr., a wealth muggle, under a love poition. When the potion was removed, Tom left Merope soon before she due to give birth and passed away. Tom Riddle grew up in an orphanage in London, unaware of his heritage. While he had some graps of his abilitie, he had an unusal high control of them than most wizard children his age. He could move objects with his, manipulate creatures as he wished, and spoke Parseltongue, the language of snakes. His favorite pass time in the oprhanage was to inflict harm on others and steal from them.
At eleven, Riddle was visited by Albus Dumbledore where he learned about his wizard powers and about Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. While during his visit, Tom showed his abuse of his wizarding powers, which had alarmed Dumbledore. He decided to keep a close eye on him while in his time at Hogwarts in case he was "alone and friendless" began inflicting harm on the students. Dumbledore also warned Tom that at Hogwarts he would be introduced to the laws that controlled the usage of magic in the wizarding world, and that law-breakers were punished with severity not by Hogwarts but the Ministry of Magic.
From 1930 to 1945, Tom attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he was sorted into the Slytherin House. While in his time there, he was ablet o convice almos tht entire staff, except for Dumbledore, of this facade he created was his true personality. Due to revealing his trueself at 11 year olds back when they first met, Tom never attempted to win over Dumbledore and came to not only fear, but despise him aw well.
Over time, Tom gathered a gang of Slytherins, which came to be the first Death Eaters. Those that joined were no more than servant to him and were treated as such.
Upon learning his family history, it is revealed that Tom is a descedant of Salazar Slytherin, which he becomes obsessed with. While researching his heritage, he discovered that his father was a muggle and thus gave himself the alais, Lord Voldemort, to spare the fact that he was a half-blood.
Through this research he also discovered the existence of the Chamber of Secrets in his fifth year. He has able to tame the beast within and used it to kill muggleborns through out the school in order to purge the school of what he deemed to be scum.
In order to stay at Hogwarts for the summer, Tom blames fellow student, Rubeus Hagrid for releasing the monster. This caused for Dumbledore to keep an even closer eye on him which led to the creation of the very first Horcuxe in a diary, hoping to finish the purging of muggleborns in the school.
In 1943, Tom traveled to Little Hangleton, the hometown of his parents to learn about his mother's family.
In Little Hangleton, Tom killed his father and grandparents to seek revenge for being muggles. He covered up his crimes by blaming his uncle and altering his memory to confess to the Ministry of Magic that he killed them.
In his sixth year, Tom charmed Professor Slughorn into the possibility of creating multiple Horcruxes. Tom succeeded in his first steps of making himself immortal.
In his seventh year, he charmed the ghost of Helena Ravenclaw into revealing the location of Rowena Ravenclaw's diadem to convert it into a Horcrux.
After graduating, Tom disappeared for ten years, slipping deeper into the Dark Arts. He began going by Lord Voldemort and spent the next 14 years gathering followers to join the Death Eaters. Whether it was through his charisma, or bribbery, Tom began manipulating people magically to join him.
He began to control the minds of others and tortured them until they begged for death for his satisfication.
He enjoyed blackmailing, killing, and jinxing not only wizards and witches, but only muggles and magical creatures.
Through Professor Trewelany, it was discovered that there was a prophecy of a boy to be born at the ends of July who would save the Wizarding World from Voldemort's reign.
